🐳 Whale season is now here! December to February is peak season and it’s quite common to see whales just offshore.

You can often view whales from the beach or a high view point. Or there are boat tours that will take you closer - just book an ethical tour that will keep a safe distance and not disturb the whales. (Please note, my video is zoomed in).

Note: This is the busiest and most concentrated season of tourism during the year. Book some ethical tours in order to learn what all the activities and traditions are about and how to observe and participate responsibly. Be respectful of the local community, this is a really special time of year for Oaxacans and tourists behaving badly have gotten worse each year.

Come with us to a hidden beach on the Oaxaca coast.

Playa del Amor is located just on the other side of Zipolite beach. You have to look for a staircase that’s tucked eastern corner of the beach.

The day we went, the ocean was rough so we couldn’t swim, but the turquoise waters and steep cliffs were beautiful. There are two little beach palapa bars if you want to rent chairs or get something to drink.

Zipolite is a nude beach so clothing is optional! Playa del Amor is also LGBTIQA+ friendly.

If you’ve been around here for awhile, you’ve definitely seen this beautiful hotel before. This is my third stay and Monte Uzulu is one of my favorite places to stay, period.

Tucked in the lush jungle of San Agustinillo, one of my favorite beaches in Oaxaca, but only a few meters from the Pacific Ocean, this is a place where you can connect with nature, relax, and enjoy beach time.

Jalatlaco is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Oaxaca city, and is filled with cobblestone streets and colorful facades. It also is one of the most famous neighborhoods for its Día de Muertos celebrations, so there are always amazing decorations and altars.

What Oaxaca centro looks like during Día de muertos - decorated facades, altars, lots of cempasúchil flowers, calaveras (skeletons) and full streets.

[ES abajo] Build our Día de Muertos (Day of the D

[ES abajo] Build our Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar with us - a Oaxacan/Gringa family - in 30 seconds.

First we need to arrange the flowers. We used 3 types of Cempasuchil (similar to Marigold) as well as Cresta de Gallo in various colors.

Then to build the altar. We use two levels, covering a bench and shelf with fabric.

Next we add candles, papel picado and calaveras.

Then lots more flowers - both in vases and also just using the tops to make designs and fill the floor and altar.

We add Pan de Muerto which is bread traditional during this time of year, as well as copal - incense.

Salt is added to help purify the spirits on their journey.

Then we add the photos of our loved ones who have passed to welcome them back.

Primero tenemos que arreglar las flores. Usamos 3 tipos de Cempasuchil (similar a Marigold) así como Cresta de Gallo en varios colores.

Luego agregamos velas, papel picado y calaveras.

Después, muchas más flores, tanto en floreros como simplemente usando la parte superior para hacer diseños y llenar el piso y el altar.

Le agregamos Pan de Muerto que es el pan tradicional en esta temporada, así como copal que es incienso.

Se agrega sal para ayudar a purificar los espíritus en su viaje.

Luego añadimos las fotos de nuestros seres queridos que han fallecido para darles la bienvenida.
