When to Travel to Holbox & Holbox Weather
Holbox is a tropical paradise with warm temperatures year-round. The best time to travel to Holbox is during the dry season, from November to May, when you’ll experience plenty of sunshine.
From June to October is the rainy season, with occasional afternoon showers. While it’s still a lovely time to visit Holbox, it’s also hurricane season, so flexibility in your travel plans is advised. No matter when you visit, pack light, breathable clothing and be prepared for humid, tropical weather.
How to Get to Holbox: Holbox Travel Guide
I’ve written a detailed guide on how to get to Holbox from Cancun or Merida, covering all the transportation options, so be sure to check that out.
What to Pack for Holbox
When preparing for your Holbox travel, pack essentials like mosquito repellent (which can also be bought locally), light clothing, and sandals that can get wet. A hat, bathing suits, and a few light layers are also recommended.
Where to Stay in Holbox
Holbox offers a variety of accommodations, from hostels and hotels to cozy Airbnbs. We stayed at Casa Mar, a lush and peaceful Airbnb located a few blocks from the main part of town and just two blocks from the beach. The kitchenette made it perfect for longer stays. Check out my full review of Casa Mar here.
How to Get Around Holbox
Holbox is a small island, so most places are accessible on foot. If you need to get around faster or have luggage, you can use the 4×4 taxis, which are plentiful around the ferry dock and throughout town.
Another fun way to explore is by renting a bicycle. You can find rentals at spots like Complemento Cafe or Clandestino, and cycling is the preferred mode of transport for locals.
What to Do in Holbox
While Holbox is perfect for relaxing on the beach, there are also many fun activities for those looking to explore. Here’s what to do in Holbox:
Swim and Watch the Sunset at Playa Holbox
The main beach, Playa Holbox, offers crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming. Don’t miss the breathtaking sunsets, which you can enjoy from one of the beachfront bars or restaurants in the center of town.
Take the 3 Islands Tour
A must-do activity on Holbox is the 3 Islands Tour, a half-day adventure where you’ll visit Cenote Yalahau, Isla de la Pasión, and Punta Mosquito. Swim in turquoise cenotes, see flamingos and wildlife, and relax in the pristine surroundings. We booked our tour through My Holbox Tours, and our guide Valerie was fantastic.
Swim with Whale Sharks and Snorkel: Holbox Tours
From May to September, you can take a once-in-a-lifetime tour to swim with whale sharks, the largest fish in the world. Along the way, you’ll also have the chance to snorkel and see sea turtles, stingrays, and tropical fish. Make sure to respect the wildlife and follow the guides’ instructions during this incredible experience.
Rent a Bicycle and Visit Playa Punta Cocos
Renting a bike is a great way to explore, and Playa Punta Cocos is a popular spot just outside the town center. While we couldn’t go because we couldn’t find a child’s helmet for our daughter, it’s a highly recommended beach with peaceful surroundings.
Admire the Street Art in the Town Center
Holbox is known for its vibrant and colorful street art. A stroll around the town center will give you plenty of photo opportunities as you take in the island’s creative energy.
Try Water Sports
For more adventurous travelers, Holbox offers water sports like kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and kiteboarding. You can find rental shops in town for equipment.
Where to Eat and Drink in Holbox
Holbox has a lot of dining options. Here are some of our favorites:
- Complemento Cafe: A stylish cafe with great coffee and a tasty breakfast menu.
- Clandestino Cafe: Another local favorite, known for its cozy vibe and excellent food.
- Roots: Famous for its lobster pizza, Roots offers great pizzas and pastas in a charming outdoor setting. Their mezcal and agave spirits selection is also worth exploring.
- Raices: This garden restaurant serves up delicious seafood. I highly recommend the grilled fish.
- Cariocas: A beachfront bar perfect for a drink and a snack while enjoying the clear ocean views.
Realities of Holbox Island: Holbox Travel Guide
While Holbox is a paradise, there are a few things to keep in mind. The island is not as developed as other parts of the Riviera Maya, and reaching it involves multiple modes of transportation. Streets can flood during the rainy season, making walking challenging in some areas. Additionally, like the rest of the Yucatan coast, Holbox can experience periods of sargassum (seaweed) washing up on the beach.
Still, these challenges are part of the adventure. Travel to Holbox with an open mind, and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful, natural surroundings, crystal-clear waters, and a truly relaxing experience. It’s truly unlike anywhere else in Mexico.
Holbox Island is a hidden gem in Mexico, offering the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Whether you’re drawn by the island’s tranquility or its unique experiences, Holbox travel will leave you with unforgettable memories. Embrace the laid-back rustic vibe, soak in the natural beauty, and enjoy all the incredible things that Holbox has to offer.
